Some geeky stuff

Review Date: June 30, 2010
Reviewer: V. Gorelov, UK
Got two of these today and both seem to work fine.

Since some of the more technically minded people like me might want to know more, here's some stuff I figured out so far:

Computer relevant capacity is 1.36TB.
It consumes 10W when in use and 9W when you're not doing anything with it. If you unplug the USB cable, power consumption drops to 4-5W.
Peak write speed seems to be somewhere between 27 and 28MB/s, which is about half of what your typical internal HDD runs at. That's about 15 hours for a full format or to fill up with files to the brink. Speed drops to around 20MB/s when copying smaller files like .mp3 music.
Comes pre-formatted with NTFS and no bundled software.
Very quiet operation.

There was a review saying that the power/USB cable ports didn't match up perfectly with the holes in the case. I can see how this can be true, as the port position seems to be flexible, perhaps to accomodate some sort of shock protection. If this were to happen, it's easy to move the ports back in place with a needle or a pen without having to exert any force at all. No biggy.

There's also a small white LED next to the power/USB ports indicating activity. It's much brighter than LEDs used in your typical keyboard and might be somewhat irritating. Easily coverable with a small patch of duct tape howerver. Won't tear off or spoil appearance because the LED is in a cavity on the back side.
Superb little external HDD

Review Date: June 20, 2010
Reviewer: John Nunn, Coventry, U.K.
I initialy got a number of these drives for backing up my Small Buisness Server. They just plug in and work, the transfer speeds are very good, a full backup of the serever (~750GB) was done in just under 2 hours and the incremental backups (~25GB) take less than 20 mins. I now have a pair of these drives at home one for my iTunes directory and one for a backup of the iTunes directory.
The drive its self is a fairly innocuous looking black box, with two sockets on the back one for power and the other a USB connector, there is also a drive activity LED on the back of the device. They can stack fairly well and I have had three of them on top of each other without any stability issues. The drives are very quiet and don't generate a lot of heat.
An excellent external HDD

Previously used a Freecom 500 aluminium case external HDD for backup, using Ghost 15.0. Good and reliable, but needed more capacity. Read all the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere on every manufacturer. Chose the Western Digital 1.5TB on specification, price, reviews and WD's reputation. Very, very pleased with it:- quiet; cool running; no gimmicks, it just gets on with it. The auto power management/sleep works well. Highly recommended.
1.5TB - Great value, great product!

Excellent value for money... fantastic for storing and backing up important files. Does not have a power switch on the box itself so it will switch on when connected to the computer and will switch off when safely removed from USB port. But that is a very minor issue. Overall a great product!
this is a neat little hard drive!!

Great drive !

Review Date: February 21, 2010
Reviewer: i.pod, London
I Have 3 of the previous model and they have not been a problem once - So I picked up one of these new version's and it worked out the box and so far it's been 100% reliable and I'm very happy with it. If you're after some cheap extra storage then I would recommend this Drive - 1TB is more than enough for 90% of everyday users
Quiet, cool and unobtrusive

Review Date: November 22, 2009
Reviewer: A. Hopkinson,
I bought this hard disk primarily for use with Apple Time Machine from two Mac laptops - a Macbook and a Macbook Pro. The drive comes formatted for Windows but a reformat only took a few seconds. Usable space on the drive is 931.5GB - I have the drive partitioned, 600GB for Time Machine and 330GB for general usage.

The drive is very smart, with a textured top and glossy sides and has rubber feet. Both connectors (power and usb) are at the back, next to a white activity light, so there's nothing flashing at the front. The power lead is fairly compact (compared to my Lacie FA Porsche drive), with the transformer built in to the plug rather than halfway along the lead. Even the USB cable is well designed, with moulded easy-grip ends.

The drive is almost completely silent and runs very cool despite having no fan. I've probably moved about 1TB on and off it over the last 24 hours and it's never even been warm. Transfer speeds seem to be around 1GB/minute for both large files (a 200GB SuperDuper sparseimage) and many small files (my 50GB iTunes library), which is about standard for a USB hard disk as far as other reviews say. This equates to about 130Mb/s - USB is apparently capable of 480Mb/s, but I've never seen those speeds.

The drive has a two year warranty in the UK/Europe, which I think is the same as other drives in the WD range (although the My Book Elite has 3 years).

All in, for a budget external drive this is a great buy with solid build and performance to match any decent USB drive.

A very robust box which performs silently.

Implementation is immediate and does not affect the performence of the laptop.

I am very pleased to own one and have found further uses than the ones I bought it for

It's black. You connect it to your PC via the USB cable provided. You connect it to a power socket via the transformer provided. Switch on your PC and you have another (BIG) hard drive that behaves just like the internal one that your PC came with. Just remember to check that your PC can cope with a drive of this size before ordering! Fabulous!

Felt compelled to write this review to tell people who MAY be interested in buying one of these that mine, bought on the 18th March 2010 DID come with a UK power adapter. It is a simple drive but excellent value for a 1TB drive. I just plugged it in and it worked. I used Microsoft SyncToy to back everything up.

Kinda like a Volvo, sqaure but good...

Review Date: July 6, 2010
Reviewer: Yeti,
After looking at various media soloutions over the past week or so I finally decided on the Cyclone MKV enclosure due to the price including 500gb hdd. After setting it up I must say I was fairly disappointed. It played media well but the front end of the UI looked terrible and was in my opinion very slow and not very intuitive. I was pretty sad after coming from using XBMC which performed like a dream (the only reason I stopped using it was due to it not really supporting HD files).

Not all was lost, Sumvision have been on the case and released a firmware upgrade for the enclosure. After installing it my opinion changed on the Cyclone MKV. The interface now didn't look like a DoS screen and had had a bit of polish thrown onto it. The speed of navigating the menus has increased (though it is still a bit laggy). This made me much happier with the machine. I know it's only the interface but these things just bug me. Hopefully Sumvision will keep rolling the updates out and keep improving on it.

Playback is awesome on the Cyclone MKV. Every file i have thrown at it it has played without a second thought. Picture quality is great and sound is nice too. Other features such as samba work as expected. I've not used the bbc or youtube facilities so can't comment on these. A great player even if it is a bit chunky and not super attractive.

In conclusion I can recommend this player, just remember to download and install the latest upgrade from Sumvision.

Cyclone MKV Full 1080p Media Player Enclosure

Customer Reviews

At this price, Its THE media player to get, iso and DTS support

Review Date: February 7, 2010
Reviewer: N. Smith,
Ive owned this machine for over a month and i must say its one of the best Media players ive got my hands on at this price range, better than the popcorn hour A-100 and the western digital Media player, the original and the live version

It has played every media file i have fed it, not once have i had to convert a file
It plays iso files with full menu and chapter support, Ideal if you want to Backup your DVD collection

The remote is well laid out and is well equipped for DVD use, you have chapter skip, audio options, subtitles, a return button to take you back to the menu screen.

Navigation through a video file is sublime, instead of just fast forward or rewindoptions (which goes to 32x speed) press the Go to button and you can choose the point you want to go to, type in 1:51, you will go 1 hours 51 minutes in to the movie

This Machine downgrades DTS to 2 channel stereo so you dont have to hook it up to your amplifer
You have the option of installing a harddrive but it isnt required

If you were willing to spend around the £150 mark, i would also recommend the popcorn hour A-200. It has more features, internet services, custom firmwares, slightly faster processer etc. but at a higher price tag thats what you would expect!

IF however your budget is under £100 and your a new adopter to the world of digital media then this player is quite literally a steal for what your paying.
highly recommended piece of hardware!
It plays everything

Sumvision MKV Enclosure

Review Date: August 29, 2010
Reviewer: ls1980,
Firstly, if you are looking for a network media player that plays most formats of media then buy this product.

I spent months looking for a device that could stream media from my PC or my NAS with HD capabilities. I already own the WD HD Media player, which is great but it lacks a few key features the MKV has. I know WD TV Live can stream media but it lacks features the MKV has so I didn't think going for the same brand was a choice for me.

The MKV can play backed-up DVD's in ISO format with full menu and with subtitle selections. Some people say the MKV Enclosure doesn't support DTS. It does and I have had no issues with it. I have my MKV connected to TV with HDMI and to my surround amp with optical S/PDIF and set to RAW in the settings. This means the optical out will send out what ever the original sound track is and my amp decodes it. My amp has a top notch decoder (Burr-Brown DAC) and produces fantastic sound quality.

Picture quality with standard DVD backups is better that the picture quality from the same DVD in my DVD player, bonus. All HD (Blu-Ray in .mkv format) content I do have either 720p or 1080p, even though compressed size wise I get fantastic picture quality. My TV isn't the latest HD ready TV as I got it a few years ago and lacks true 1080p but does have 1080i and in this mode picture quality is again fantastic.

All my media is stored on my PC/NAS and when I have the MKV connected to it through a wired network I have not had any problems. I can have a DVD being backed-up on the PC and still stream a film from the same HDD with no issues. I'm lucky maybe as I have networked my house with wall points that my main router plugs into. So PC is upstairs and MKV downstairs.

I have read that lots of people have had issues with setting up, wont play this or that, cant update firmware and other issues...................I haven't had any issues.

Setup was done in less than 10 mins and I am no computer wiz kid. Pretty much plug `n' play (UPnP).

As for cost, well bargain is an understatement. I was looking at other devices that cost twice and upwards. I had looked at another system that costs 10 times than this product and ok, it was all singing and dancing but could justify the high cost.

Buy if you want a network media player.
Buy if you want an easy to use product.
Buy if you want fantastic picture/sound quality.
Buy if you want a cheap but good quality product.

As this is the MKV Enclosure you can add a SATA HDD to the unit. I haven't done this yet as I haven't filled up the 1.5Tb HDD in my PC. The unit has a quiet fan that runs at one speed but if you don't fit a HDD to the unit I'd unplug it like I have. The unit doesn't get hot. I've had mine on for two days now and still ok. The size of the case is large enough to disperse heat.
Great media player

This works well with no problems so far. Bigger than the WDTV, but better features and fewer bugs. Digital sound is well handled. Home networking is also very easy. I can recommend disconnecting the fan if you are not putting a hard drive inside.
A great addition to the living room

Reviewer: Viv, Devon, UK
We ordered this as an upgrade to an existing media player that we have had for several years. The old player would not play the new formats such as H.264 or dvd file formats. This media player seems to be able to cope with any format, enabling us to store all of our media (dvd's, home movies, music etc) on the one hard drive.

I don't know why more paople don't buy one of these - they are incredibly useful.

Face Detection to keep portraits in focus Face Detection is very handy for shooting larger groups and scenes where faces might get lost against a detailed background. The sensor recognises faces as faces and automatically adjusts the exposure, white balance and flash settings to show skin tones at their best. Up to 8 faces can be recognised in any scene. The high sensitivity sensor enables great pictures in low light The W180’s sensor is measured at ISO 3200 so is highly sensitive to light and can automatically provide clear images in low light conditions, such as indoors or at twilight. On top of that, there are six pre-set options so you can quickly choose the best settings for a particular type of scene. Retouch shots on the move If you can want to improve your shot right there and then, you can even perform simple retouching operations in camera without needing to download the image to your PC — such as cropping, altering exposure or removing red–eye. SteadyShot to reduce picture blur If you are shooting with the camera in your hand, there is always a danger of handshake spoiling your picture, even if your subject is stationary. To avoid this problem, the W180 takes two shots at the same time at high shutter speed and combines them for one bright, blur free image – all you have to do is press the shutter once. PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software Managing your growing photo collection is hugely simplified by this software which is included with the W180. Just install it on your PC and it provides a perfect archive for your shots which are all just a click or two away. You can arrange them by date, by person, and even search through them quickly. From here you can burn them to discs, send them to friends or upload them to sites in a matter of seconds. If you connect your W180 or computer directly to an HD Ready TV you can view your shots in spectacular HD on the big screen. If your TV is a BRAVIA which supports PhotoTV HD, you’ll be able to experience even more lifelike HD images, bursting with detail and colours. ‘Sony’, ‘Cyber-shot’, ‘SteadyShot’ ‘BRAVIA’ and their logos are trademarks or registered trademarks of Sony Corporation. Excellent Camera

Review Date: December 18, 2009
Reviewer: Mr. S. Newbury, London, England
I have another Sony compact so knew when purchasing this camera for my sister the Cyber-Shot DSCW180 would be a quality camera and it is. Excellent build, great photo's and easy to use. This is not intended for the serious photographer who wants the ability to produce professional quality blow-ups. I feel this camera is aimed at amateurs and those that just want high quality snaps that will display well on pc's or print to enlargements. This camera fits the bill perfectly.

A fine Camera

Review Date: May 10, 2010
Reviewer: SJ Goldsworthy, London, UK
This certainly deserves a 5 star rating and I'm not sure if one of the previous reviewers had a defective unit as I don't recognise the description at all.

I've used DSLRs for over 4 years now and I was dying for a product that I could take with me (on occasions when a DSLR would not work) that approached DSLR levels of image quality. This is undoubtedly it. As a previous reviewer notes, the intelligent auto function is approximately 10 times more effective than the auto options on other digital cameras. Most of the time you really can point and click.

My battery life on medium to average use (say about 150-200 pictures in a day) was about a day and a half. I don't think that's unusual. I think the default setting for GPS is to check location about every 10 minutes or so - if you increase the frequency of checking it will drain the battery. In any event, I didn't find battery life a problem and the GPS feature does add some fun to looking at pictures in Picasa.

I just wanted to mention another feature that's great - the 16:9 picture mode. I know cameras increasingly have this, but it really does let you create amazing desktop wallpapers for your PC.

The AVCHD video quality is good as long as you don't expect it to approach 1080p/full hd video quality (obviously, since its effectively 720p). It isn't shabby for a compact though. AVCHD playback is widely available with Windows 7 (the codec is included) so I wouldn't worry about compatibility.

Very satisfied with my purchase, even though I paid more for it than it currently retails for.
Great!

I bought this camera beacause I wanted a small one that I could change ISO, shutter speed and aperture. This has helped me get really good pictures, iA also works great. The camera feels really sturdy in your hands .
GPS works just fine, it is fast in spite of what I have read in some reviews.
16x zoom is real, doesn't work like digital zoom in other cameras. This one really has 16x.
I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to learn a little more about photography. It lets you customize everything.

Bought this camera in a hurry for a looming holiday, wanted a compact camera that was easy to operate, fairly robust and took good pictures. Being a bit geeky I was attracted to the idea of the inbuilt GPS to avoid those arguments of where the photo was taken. bought a spare battery as well as was concerned about battery life. Also considered the Olympus tough/mju cameras but decided the image quality wasn't as good as the TZ10 and the TZ10 was robust enough for my purposes

After 6 weeks on the road, with 750+ photos taken I'm still impressed the the picture quality. the Ia function works well, meaning I haven't explored the other modes at all. I have no interest in the movie function, I wanted still picture quality.

in that time theres only been one out of focus/blurred photo. the battery life is fine, you'd only really need the spare if you were going away from the power grid for a while.

its a bit bulkier and heavier than most cameras, it would be nice if it came with a case or bag.. its easy to scratch the finish or screen if you don't have a case.

the one major letdown in my books is the GPS isn't very useful. I was on a road trip and the GPS was rarely accurate, usually it was out by 10..30 minutes, often 2 hours or more. mebbe if your use isn't so frenetic the GPS may be useful, but if you are constantly on the move the GPS doesn't keep up. Its a great idea but not well enough implemented, so save you money and buy the non GPS version.
Best in its class.

A little known fact is that Panasonic now makes most of Leica's small compact cameras. The quality you get with a genuine Leica, which is extraordinary, is now available in a Panasonic Lumix - but at 50% of the cost. Even so, the asking price of this camera is hardly cheap but I'd say it is worth every penny. The lens is excellent. The build quality excellent. Battery life is good. Photographs can easily be transferred from the industry standard memory stick to a computer. And it is easy to use with controls and a menu system that are ideal. Having owned Sony, Canon and Olympus compact cameras, I think this Lumix is in another league. Ultimately, if picture quality boils down to the lens, and i think it does, then this little camera as good as it gets before you need to buy an SLR.

Having sold my Canon digital SLR EOS450 I find this Lumix a joy to have. It is so much easier than the SLR and really does do at least 80% of what the SLR could do. A very good camera.

The shadows soul revealed

Reviewer: Ms. M. Bencec, UK

"Shadow Souls" continues where "Nightfall" had left off. Matt, Damon and Elena are on their way to free Stefan from the "Shi no Shi" - a prison in the Dark Dimension where the evil kitsune Shinichi and Misao (fox spirits from Japan that were introduced in "Nightfall") left Elenas beloved vampire boyfriend Stefan to rott.

The trip is difficult for Matt, Elenas's Ex whose hands were forced into accompanying Elena and Stefan's brother Damon on this journey by a series of lies that were spread about him by Caroline.
Elena is trying to keep strong but whilst desperately clinging on to her love for Stefan, the agonising fear of what the evil foxspirits are putting him through at the Shi no Shi eats at her.
The knowledge of the truth behind this fear hits quickly after seeing him vulnerable and weak in his cell during an out of body experience.

But whilst discovering her altered physical state and strange new powers, her hope of finding Stefan alive - sparked by her out of body meeting of her beloved - gives her the strength to see this impossible quest through.

Damen however is torn between genuinely wanting to help his brother out of guilt and his continueous attempt of luring Elena into becoming his Princess of Darkness.

When Elenas new power accidentally compells Damon into kissing her, both their minds get mingled and unbeknown to Damon Elena finds herself starting to see a side of Damon that he would never willingly share with anyone.
Growing curious to find out more about the real Damon, Elena finds herself secretly letting her feelings for him grow into something that might endanger her future with Stefan.

Matt tries to protect Elena from what he perceives as Damons supernatural influence on his friends girlfriend, but he soon starts to realise things might not be as clear cut as they seem.

When he becomes witness of a suggestive situation between Damon and Elena he decides to leave the group and go back to Fells Church.

Meanwhile, back in Fells church, Elenas best friends Meredith and Bonnie are trying to help free Stefan by gaining more information on the kitsune and trying to figure out what is going on with pregnant Caroline whose behaviour mirrors one of a wild animal rather than a human.

Left to themselves Damon and Elena continue their mission to find Stefan but Elenas intrigue for Damon keeps making things difficult and Shinichis ability to steal Damons memories is starting to endanger the success of their mission quickly.
Much to the surprise of Damon and Elena, Meredith and Bonnie appear at their door step just before reaching the Dark Dimension and with that Elena is given a new hope and a glimpse at possible success of the rescue.

Even though Damon is not thrilled to see the two girls and even less convinced they should join them, he soon realises that facing the supernatural obstacles ahead together might just be the only way to earn Elenas trust.

Together they have to overcome prejudice and pride to gain access to the Dark Dimension and once they do, they discover that the rules in the world they have entered are completely different to what they know and human life is meaningless - but worst of all: Not even Damon is untouchable.

I believe L.J. Smith has taken the opportunity of the entire "The Return" series of the Vampire Diaries to increase focus on Elena and Damon rather than Stefan and Elena.
Whatever it was that made her let the "bad boy" shine it shall be hailed in eternity because it was exactly the right thing to do!

Damon Salvatore is not the obvious choice for Elena. If you follow the series, you will agree that he is pretty much introduced as the Anti hero from the first time he is given a sentence to speak.
As the obvious hero - you are introduced to Stefan, the sensible brother and tame vampire who doesn't kill people and spends most of his time thinking about how to make Elena happy.

He has always been made into the obvious choice but the shadow which was Damon has been creeping up into the light of the storylines and finally, in this book his shadow has been given a real soul.

The reader is succesfully introduced to the real Damon Salvatore and as the book ends with a BIG BANG I cannot wait to read the last in the series to see the conclusion of this love triangle.

Reviewer: Nieve, Some where in a book
I read the whole series of vampire diaries in a small amount of time, after getting into the TV series, which is completely different to the book series but brilliant all the same.

I thought this book was amazing and I really couldn't put it down until I had finished it, you get a real insight into Damons way of thinking, and as he is one of my favourite characters that was a big plus for me.

This book takes you into a whole new world, literally as a lot of it is set in a different dimension, we get to meet loads of fantastic new characters but without leaving the old ones behind.

I don't want to go on because I'll end up telling half the story I'll just say that it's well worth the read and will leave you desperate for more, thats how I felt at least.
Packed full of dark twists and turns and Damon and Elena...

Reviewer: Ms. C. A. Anderson, East Kilbride, Scotland
I have just finished Shadow souls and I have been left reeling, I will not say why though! ;)

The book starts exactly where we were left off by L.J.Smith in the previous book Nightfall. Damon, Elena alongwith on the run Matt, head for a gate to the Dark Dimension to free Stefan after Misco and Shinshi tricked him along with Damon into going there on false pretenses. Damon, having seen what the two kitsune are capable of in the last book agrees to do anything to help Elena in her quest to the Dark Dimension to find the two halves of the fox key that will free Stephan from his cell there.

Matt decides to go back to Fell's Church to help Mrs.Flowers and their other allies there and Bonnie and Meridith join Elena and Damon on the journey into the dark Dimension where Damon becomes their owner and them his slaves to fit in...of course all does not go to plan. Everything in the dark dimension is different and Elena can not stand to see the suffering of the slaves with one in particular who repays them in a way you can never imagine. Elena soon learns that she can not act like she did in her world here and begins to conform and play along in order to serve her purpose of freeing Stefan but it is much harder than they thought to find the two halves.

I really liked the fact that this book concentrated heavily on the relationship between Elena and Damon. Having already had that can of worms opened in the last book, Damon and Elena have a number of close encounters where she see's his true side and I thought it was clear that Elena maybe even loved him and Damon her. This added a new layer to the Stefan, Damon, Elena love triangle while at the same time hidding it as Elena and Damon would not admit their feelings. I think partly because Elena does not want to admit it, maybe so but there are still a number of moments where she pulls it back for Stefan so we will have to see how Smith takes this in the next installment. I also really liked the cuts back to Fell's Church which allowed you to see what Matt and Mrs.Flowers were doing but the focus of the book was definately on the happenings in the Dark Dimesion which hogged all the action with four of the main characters.

The ending was not what I expected, which I always like! And it poses a whole new set of problems for the brothers to come to terms with, I will say that I felt sorry for Stefan when I realised what Damon had taken...

Overall, I loved this book and I love the whole series. I know others have said there is something lacking and I do agree with this but perhaps it is to be resolved in the next installment: The Return: Midnight which I have pre ordered and is out on the 3rd of March 2011!!! Cant wait!!!
